Applesauce Cake Recipe


2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup seedless raisins
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/3 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup pureed applesauce

Sift flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves together. Mix in raisins and nuts. Cream shortening in a mixing bowl; add sugar, creaming well. Add egg; beat until mixture is fluffy. Stir in applesauce and dry ingredients. Mix until blended. Do not overbeat. Pour batter into a greased pan (9x9 inches) ; bake in a moderate oven (350F) 45 minutes. Cool. Frost with Peanut-Butter Frosting . Yield: 9x9-inch cake-16 pieces.
